A new revolution in midi equipement. Now with some fresh images.
I came across the Roto-Control during my first NAMM show in 2025. This piece of kit inspiried me to finally learn plasticity and model in a more precise way.
Challenges
Effectively lighting the keycaps realistically required a semi-transparent inset and some custom booleans to get the right shapes and iconography. LED screens looked too artificial so I needed a better way to display pixels.
Solutions
Placing area light sources under a semi-opaque random walk scattered material appeared like real backlit keycaps. Splitting the RGB channels and multiplying by a pixel pattern texture created a realistic moire pattern on the LCD screens.
